Who is Spencer?

Dr. Spencer M Dayton was born into a middle class, union household in California’s Central Valley. From an early age his parents instilled the importance of education and standing up for what you believe in.

Dr. Dayton is renowned as the President and Executive Director of the Military Health Project & Foundation and an expert in public policy, fundraising and veterans’ affairs. He holds both a Bachelor of Arts in Government with an Emphasis in Legal Studies (Magna Cum Laude) and a Master of Public Administration with an Emphasis in Government and Policy (Summa Cum Laude) and a Doctorate of Public Administration with a Concentration in Law and Policy.

From 2009 to 2018, Dr. Dayton was a member of DeMolay International serving in various leadership roles. Prior to beginning his career in public policy he found success in the health and fitness industry, and holds ACE, NCSF and ASFA fitness and sports credentials. Dr. Dayton was also active as the Director of Youth Programs and the youth advanced/expert instructor at New School Aikido from 2013-2017. 

From 2015-2016 Dr. Dayton thrived in various departments of the Twin Arbors Athletic Club (owned by SpareTime, INC.). He also served as a manager for Big 5 Sporting Goods and began his transition toward policy in 2016. In 207, he became a Senior Policy Advisor and Cabinet Level Secretary for the Office of Jerry Brown, Governor of California. Dr. Dayton further flourished as a policy advisor until 2019, at which point he accepted the post of Associate Dean of Students- leaving as an Associate Vice President at a California State University. 

Moreover, Dr. Dayton became the President and Executive Director of the Military Health Project and Foundation, a California based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the outcomes of veterans through legislative advocacy and community partnerships. The Military Health Project & Foundation administers a grant programs for veterans and a training and placement program for service and emotional support dogs. Driven by the desire to have an impact on others’ lives, Dr. Dayton believes that human rights to security, health care and shelter are keystones to individual dignity, and strives to ensure that all veterans are equipped with the tools and voice required to succeed following their service. 

In addition to his work with veterans’ affairs, Dr. Dayton is the author of “The Failing American Experiment” an article published in the journal of the London School of Economic and seven novels for adults and teens as well as several other articles and theses. He is a member of the California Democratic Party, with which he is currently serving as a delegate, the Young Democrats of America, and the California Young Democrats, for which he was recruited on several committees. Dr. Dayton is also the former head coach of the Lodi Junior Giants, a free non-competitive baseball league for youth aged 5-18. 

Notably Dr. Dayton is the recipient of the 2014 Willie Mac Award and the Military Health Project & Foundation has earned a Platinum Seal of Transparency and been recognized as a Great Nonprofit each year since 2016. A commissioned Nebraska Admiral and a Kentucky Colonel, he was celebrated as a fellow of the Royal Historical Society in London, England and has been presented with numerous citations and honors from state, local and federal governments for his work in policy and advocacy. Accruing four honorary doctorates, he attributes his success to his faith and to his ability to make genuine connections with others. He considers the opportunities to connect with others across the nation, regardless of personal philosophy, to have been the highlight of his career thus far.
